The goal of the Home Energy Scotland (HES) scheme is to assist homeowners in Scotland in enhancing the energy efficiency of their homes.
Through this scheme, homeowners can apply for a grant along with an interest-free loan. Additionally, a rural uplift option is offered to provide supplementary assistance to rural and island homes, where the cost of installing home improvements may be higher.

What can the Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan be used for?
Enhancing your home’s energy efficiency or installing renewable systems like heat pumps are just two ways you can utilise a Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan.
Who can apply?
You’re eligible to apply for the Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan scheme if your property is located in Scotland and you are:
- A homeowner residing in the property you own.
- Constructing your own home – the grant and loan can be used for home renewables or energy storage systems. Other enhancements aren’t applicable for self-build projects.
Landlords, businesses, and property developers are not eligible. They should explore the Scottish Government’s Private Rented Sector Landlord Loan for similar funding opportunities.

How does the funding work for heat pumps?
Homeowners can access funding for installing a new heat pump through a combination of grants and loans:
Grant: Grant funding for new heat pumps can be up to £7,500 (£9,000 for qualifying households in rural areas).
Loan: The remaining amount can be obtained as an interest-free loan, with a maximum of £7,500.
